The Pioneer: Bill Russell
They talk about the greatest basketball players of all-time, and nowadays the conversation starts at Magic, Bird, or Jordan. But what about Bill Russell? Olympic Gold Medalist, two-time NCAA Champion, 11-time NBA Champion, 12-time NBA All-Star, and 5-time league MVP. No-one in the NBA has EVER posted numbers like that. No one.
In 1966, Russell proved his mind was as good as his hook shot when he became the Celtics’ player-coach, becoming the first African-American coach in the NBA. The cold realities of race in Boston left Russell bitter in many ways about the plight of black players and people.
But as Ron discovered in his sit-down with the great Bill Russell, his smile and attitude are still bright and beautiful.
